DELTA ACADEMY & G.E.M.S
The Fredericksburg Area Alumnae Chapter (FAAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Delta Academy and GEMS Committee is comprised of three co-chairs and twelve committee members who strive to not only meet but to exceed the established goals for both the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy and Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute. “The Delta Academy was created in 1996 out of an urgent sense that bold action was needed to save our young females (ages 11-14) from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures”. A primary goal of the program is to prepare young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century”. The Delta GEMS Institute was created to catch the dreams of African American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18, however, participation is not limited to African Americans. “Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN-DO attitude”. Goals for Delta GEMS consist of instilling the need to excel academically, providing tools for academic success, assisting with proper goal setting and planning for high school and beyond and creating compassionate, caring community minded young women.
2024 REGISTRATION INFORMATION
INFORMATION
The Delta Academy and GEMS Committee refers to the National Curriculum Manuals, activity observations, results of surveys conducted at the conclusion of each activity, open discussions with participants, and feedback from parents to develop our yearly programming to meet established goals. Monthly activities are structured to enhance the education that our young teens receive in school. Activities implemented most often include community service projects, computer training, political awareness discussions, self-esteem and etiquette workshops, field trips for college exposure, special outings to cultural events, fancy dinners, museums, and plays to name a few. Financial limitations are always taken into consideration but never precludes participation in any activity. Collaboration with other committees within the sorority and community organizations is extremely valuable and affords the participants the opportunity to view firsthand the significance of good leadership and how working together impacts our community. The Delta Academy and GEMS Committee recognizes the growth of our participants and encourages them to strive for more.
